Nell was born on February 7, 1921 in South Pittsburg, TN to Homer and Bertha (Johnson) Merriman, the youngest of five siblings. After graduating from high school, she worked in Mobile, AL and Nashville, TN, helping with the war effort. It was in Nashville, on a blind date that Nell met, the love of her life, Stewart. After six weeks of courtship, they were married on May 15, 1943. After the war Nell and Stewart moved to Sheperd, where Stewart became a partner with Gould Drug Company. She was also predeceased by two infant children, Richard and Elizabeth.
