Thomas Wightman Martin, age 80, of Rosebush passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility.
Funeral Services for Thomas will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ronald Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 25, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue the day of the service from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Rosebush United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.
Thomas was born on December 14, 1932 in Cassville, WV, the son of Raymond Bowers and Georgia Fay (Marden) Martin. Thomas graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1950. He also trained at the FBI Academy, and was a lifetime member. Thomas served in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He married Donna True Garretson on November 1, 1952, in Fort Worth, TX. Thomas served as Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety for the City of Mt. Pleasant for 26 years, retiring in 1980. He also served as Director of Community Affairs at Isabella Bank & Trust, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Escapee RV Club, Rosebush United Methodist Church, Life Member of the Michigan Police Chiefs Association, FBI Academy, and past President of the Mt. Pleasant Kiwanis Club. Thomas enjoyed mowing the lawn, bowling, hunting and being in his woodshop.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Randall (Jane) Martin of Mt. Pleasant, the Rev. T. Ried (Karen) Martin of Crystal, Ronald G. (Gloria) Martin of Mt. Pleasant, Richard (Lori) Martin of Farwell, and Renae Lynn (Joseph) Crawford of Rosebush; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Decker of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law, Geraldine Barnes of Mansfield, TX; and many nieces and nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Martin in 1997; sister, Eleanor Hoyle in 1984; and brother-in-law, Warren (Jim) Decker in 2010.
