Norman Joseph Schafer Obituary
Schafer, Norman Joseph “Charlie”; age 86; of Shepherd; was called home on March 16, 2014 to join his Savior and reunite with family and friends that preceded him. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. from St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Shepherd. Interment will be in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m., with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. at the Berry Funeral Home.Norm was born in Beal City, Michigan, as one of several children of Frank and Louise Schafer. He served with the United States Army’s 42nd Engineering and Construction Battalion in Korea from April 1946 to May of 1947. On January 6, 1951 Norman married Viola Klumpp. In the 50’s they moved their family to Shepherd where they have resided since. Norman retired from the Dow Chemical Company in 1986 after 32 years of service, where at retirement was their mail person, a job he truly loved because of the interaction with so many different people. He was an active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Shepherd, where he worked as a maintenance man after retirement, another job he truly enjoyed. He was also an original member of Knights of Columbus Council 8554 at St. Vincent’s. Norman’s compassion and love for people lead him to the commission on aging as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels as well as transporting people to appointments. He was awarded the Gold Key Award. Besides his wife, Viola, Norman is survived by his children, Deborah (Carl) Hawkins of Niles, MI, Michael (Janice) Schafer of Clare, MI, Patrick (Laurie) Schafer of Canadian Lakes, MI, Mary Schafer (Gregg Bohn) of Columbus, OH, David (Trisha) Schafer of Shepherd, MI, and Jeanette (Basil) Wilber of Dousman, WI; son-in-law, James Preston of Petoskey, MI; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Francis, Everett (Betty) of Beal City, James (Patricia) of Mt. Pleasant; and 1 sister, Evelyn (Ron) Malish of Mt. Pleasant. Besides his parents, Norman was preceded in death by a daughter in 2003, Pamela Preston; brothers, Kenneth and Donald (Nick); sisters, Lillian, Sr. Margaret Schafer, Orie Farner, Marie Rahl, Beatrice Sheahan and Betty Sunderman. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you consider donation to Great Lakes Hospice or St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
