HELBER, RICHARD “Sonny” EUGENE; age 70; of Marion, formerly of Mt. Pleasant; passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014, at North Naples Hospital in Naples, Florida. Funeral Services for Sonny will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel with Fr. Joseph Fix of St. Agnes Parish-Marion officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. until the time of Service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Parish, Alano Club-Fancher Street, Mt. Pleasant, or Sacred Heart Academy Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel. Richard was born on November 28, 1943, in Flint, the son of Kenneth and Ruth (Scott) Helber. He attended Central Michigan University and the Police Academy. He served in the National Guard Military Police for six years and was a state trooper with the Michigan State Police for five years in Newaygo, Jonesville, and Lansing. Sonny was the co-owner/operator of Melody Music, retiring in 2006. He then went into commercial real estate. Sonny married Shirley Nowland on January 15, 1966, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was active in the CMU Athletic Department for 45 years and was a strong supporter of the Norval Morey Cancer Center. He volunteered at the St. Agnes Soup Kitchen. AA was instrumental in his life since May 20, 1979. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He enjoyed all sports but especially CMU sports and the Detroit Tigers. First and foremost in Sonny’s life was his love for his wife, children and grandchildren. Sonny is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Helber, of Marion; children Lisa (Roland) Townsend of Naples, FL, and Stephanie (Douglas) Crall of Northville; three grandchildren, Kaela Crall, Sierra Crall, and Samuel Richard Townsend; sisters, Margo (Wally) Link of Mt. Pleasant and Nancy (John) Card of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents.
