John Peter Verwey, age 82, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, November 9, 2012, at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John will be held on Tuesday, November 13, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Loren Kalinowski officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 11, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday, November 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, November 13, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Academy Foundation or to the Isabella County Medical Care Facility. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel and Sacred Heart Catholic Church during the service.
John was born on September 26, 1930, in Weidman, the son of Andrew and Margaret (Marhofer) Verwey. John was the first generation to be born in the United States after his father immigrated here in 1917 from Rilland, Netherlands. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in 1949 and CMU in 1962. John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. During his time in the Armed Forces, John married the love of his life, Barbara Kanine, on March 5, 1953, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served on various committees throughout his life, American Legion, Moose Lodge, and the Knights of Columbus. John also had an interest in horse racing, enjoyed his Monday night poker games and coffee with friends at Crankers and Stan's. He began his career with Union Township as a supervisor and later a trustee and was involved with various committees for over 50 years.
John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; 3 sons, Andy (Cindy) Verwey of Mt. Pleasant, David John (Cindi) Verwey of Mt. Pleasant, and Daniel Joseph (Michelle) Verwey of North Carolina; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Marinus (Mary Ann) Verwey of Rosebush and Joseph (Dolly) Verwey of Sierra Vista, AZ.
John was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dorothy Fitzpatrick.
