Daniel Thomas Becnel

Daniel Thomas Becnel, aged 92, peacefully passed away on September 16, 2013, at the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve, La. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Una Mae D'Aunoy Becnel. Mr. Becnel was born on September 4, 1921, in New Orleans, La., to Premilas Francis Becnel and Inez "Jackie" Bourgeois Becnel. He was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School and attended Tulane University. Mr. Becnel was a veteran of the United States Navy, and was a member of the Patrol Bombing Squadrons VPB and VP 139 in the Aleutian Islands during World War II, where he was awarded a Gold Star after receiving three Air Medals for his heroic actions. He retired from the Navy after 22 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer, and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Becnel spent many years at his home in Waveland, Ms., where he enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, fishing, crafts and visiting the casinos. He is survived by his children, Peggy Becnel O'Hara (Bobby), Thomas Becnel (Susan), Paul Becnel (Fran), John Becnel (Annette), and Andrew Becnel (Christy); and his brother, John E. Becnel (June). He was preceded in death by his children, Daniel Becnel (Marjy) and Jackie Papelette; and his sisters, Florine Peters and Lurline Lichtenstein. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Veterans Home for their kindness and care. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 12:00 noon.
