Ethel Ratcliffe Phillips Arthus

Ethel Ratcliffe Phillips Arthus, wife of the late Charles J. Arthus, 104 years of age. Ethel, former garden editor of the States Item newspaper and author of gardening column ""Mulching It Over"" for more than 20 years, was a lifelong artist and writer. She was active in garden club circles and often called upon to share her gardening expertise as a guest speaker. She was a Master Judge Emeritus of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Past President & life member of New Orleans Garden Society, Founder and Past President of Lake Oaks Garden Club, Past President and member of Garden Sprouts Garden Club, Amaryllis Society Judge, and American Camellia Society Judge. Born in Brookhaven, MS, December 17, 1909 she was a graduate of Amite High School. She resided in New Orleans for more than 70 years, When Katrina precipitated her move to Nouveau Marc in Kenner, and she continued her writing career as a frequent contributor to The Nouveau Notes. She is predeceased by husband, Charles J. Arthus, father- in-law Alphonse Arthus, mother Aline Carpenter Van Rhuden, and step father, Jacques Van Rhuden. Special thanks to her devoted friend and caregiver Merle Ann Roberts and the staff of Nancy's Private Care. Funeral for Ethel, will be held at Schoen Funeral Home, on Saturday May 17th.
