Wendell Eugene Obituary

Wendell Albert Eugene, trombonist and New Orleans Jazz Legend, and retiree of the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at the age of 94. Wendell served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, performing with distinction in the Navy's marching and concert bands during his enlistment. At the age of 13, Wendell's oldest brother Homer gave him his first trombone. Wendell joined the musician's union at 15 years old, while still in high school. His career as an outstanding traditional New Orleans Trombonist spanned over seven decades. He leaves to cherish his memories four daughters Adele Blanchard, Wendolyn Hampton (Leonce), Shelia Eugene and Patrice McNeal (Terry). Proud grandfather of Wellington Blanchard III, Michael Blanchard, Craig Hampton, Jason Hampton, and Michael Frazier Jr. Wendell also had nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two nieces, four nephews. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years Bernice Ernestine Dede Eugene; parents Homer and Apha Eugene; brothers Homer, Vital, Lehman and Adrian Eugene; and one grandson Gerard Blanchard. A devoted friend Kate Johnson. Also survived by a host of relatives, close musicians and friends. Relatives, friends and fellow musicians are invited to attend the Christian Burial Mass on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at 10:00 AM at Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church, 2212 Prentiss Ave., NOLA. Visitation begins at 8:30 A.M. Internment Mt. Olivet Cemetery, NOLA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Musician's Clinic and Assistance Foundation, 1525 Louisiana Ave., NOLA 70115; (504) 415-3414. Online donations cant be made at neworleansmusiciansclinic.org.
