Helen Miller Obituary

In memory of Helen Lorraine Alexander Miller, who passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the age of 93. Survived by 4 children: Maureen Kuehne, Barbara Wilburn, Michael Miller, and Mitchell Miller; son-in-laws: Doug Wilburn and John Kuehne; former daughter-in-law: Beverly Melancon Miller Blackburn; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, Harley the cat and Casino the dog. Born in New Orleans on April 30, 1924. Daughter of the late Marguerite Donaghey Alexander and George Albert Alexander; sibling of the late Lillian Alexander Peterson and the late James Robert Alexander. Resident of New Orleans all her life; lived in Carrollton, Gentilly, ""old"" Metairie, Little Farms and ""new"" Metairie. Attended Robert E. Lee grade school, graduated from McMain High School. Married Matt Miller in 1944 and worked with him as a consultant in the hearing aid business and later as secretary / jack-of-all-trades in the hand cleaner business. Helen was adventurous; she caught a 109 lb. swordfish on a fishing excursion near Acapulco, Mexico, which occupied a place of honor on the wall in the Miller home for over 40 years; she acted in the movie ""JFK"" as the receptionist for Jim Garrison (played by Kevin Costner); she competed in the TV game show ""Concentration"" in New York City and won many prizes including trips to Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, Washington DC, Boston, and Los Angeles; she was as an active member of the Krewe of Iris for 36 years, and for a number of years made annual visits to New York City for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Special appreciation to long-time next door neighbor Barbara Manning; and also to Debra Martin, Darlene Upton and Sue Solano who provided special care to Helen in her later years. Helen was generous and kind to all she knew and will be greatly missed by her many friends and family members. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Monday, May 22, 2017 beginning at 10:00 AM, with a service following at 12 noon. Helen still seems to grace the street of her residence. I feel her presence and actually live close to that location now. No one ever had such a sweet warm glow like Helen. May family and friends always remember this wonderful soul. --- Henry Buscher. text 504 939 0448.

Passing away on the feast of the Ascension, it was as if Our Lord said, "Good job, Helen. You always honored me on the big days (Christmas, etc.), so I am taking you on another big day." [email protected]

Helen was my "second mom", with a sense of humor that could light up a whole city. How poetic that she departed on the feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, Who is our Hope that we can ascend, too, when the time comes. As He said, He has prepared a place for us. May Helen be celebrating the eternal ride, the great parade that never ends. She is missed.

Miss Helen was truly one of a kind. She holds a very special place in my heart for all of the love she showed to me ever since becoming friends with Mitch in college. From Iris Mardi Gras balls to brunches with her and Mr. Matt at the Court of Two Sisters to lovely visits and parties - I will always remember her as a woman of love, laughter and spunkiness! My heartfelt condolences to all of you as your rejoice in her being reunited with your dad but missing the fullness of her earthly life. Much love, Mindy

I was saddened to see Mrs. Miller's obituary this morning. I have great memories of watching her play and win on Concentration and her Sloppy Joe's after EJ football games. Sending condolences from the Miley family to the Miller family. May God be with you all.

Ms Helen was such a special lady and I feel blessed to have known her. She has always treated The Manning's as family she even gave my Bridal Luncheon. A lady with such kindness, grace and beauty inside and out will surely be missed.
