I met Steve when I entered Tulane School of Architecture in 1974. He was as everyone describes him: jovial, animated, and passionate about life. I often spoke to him about his Peace Corps experience and even applied for a position myself just before my graduation from Tulane. I did not go that route, but I was very persuaded to follow his footsteps of this mentor. Condolences to all who knew him and as with all old acquaintances, they will live in my memory forever.

I met Steve when I was a LAS grad student at Tulane. I think it was an inter-departmental shindig they called the Meeting of the Tribes (free food and booze). For the next 2 years, we regularly met for lunch, usually a po-boy joint Steve picked. He was always so animated about food and fun conversation. Years later, after Katrina, Steve needed a place to live and we helped him (and the cats) find a place in Austin. I remember he couldn't wait to take the bus to UT and spend the day visiting different departments (architecture, music and LAS). Not 3 days in he tore his achilles (at the bus stop) and I became his chaperone and sidekick for errands and doctor visits - we had so much fun! Despite being a Katrina refugee and largely immobile, Steve maintained a wonderful sense of adventure and positive attitude. I miss my friend.

Steve was my very special friend. I first met him through my sister, Alice Eichold. Alice moved to Ca. to practice her Architecture. I think first of Steve and his cats, especially Felix, then of our dinners and movies. He came to Mobile and stayed here where we enjoyed his student's wedding.
There will always be a lost spot in my heart without having my dear friend. I was priviledged to be his friend.

I remember meeting Stephen Paul when I was a sophomore at Newcomb, not long after he joined the Architectural Faculty (family) of TU at the most amazing time with my father, Robert Schenker, Bill Turner, Bob Helmer, John Rock and many more, part of that illustrious team now almost faded away, but ever vivid in our minds; each touching hundreds and leaving their mark. Stephen Paul was such a bright and jovial light in the room; a pleasure to have known, whether as teacher or as friend. Condolences to his entire family and vast circle of friends, and what a generous and loving gift he left to Tulane in so many ways!

The Shades of Praise Gospel Choir is sad to say goodbye to Steve, but glad to know that he is adding that deep rich basso voice to the angels' choir along with the other Shades who have gone before.

Stephen was a unique presence at Tulane, always knowledgeable and engaging, curious about all things Latin America, enthusiastic participant in all of the Latin American Library's events. We will miss you, Stephen. Que en paz descanses.

My life is richer for having had Steve as my friend. He was a one-of-a-kind example of intellectual curiosity and personal kindness, all rolled in to one. He was also the only person in the world to have ever called me Amita. He will be missed by many. Peace to you, amigo mio.
