A celebration of the life of Gerald John Venable, who joined our Lord in Heaven on Easter Sunday, will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette. Visitation will be observed at Fountain Memorial on Wednesday, April 23rd from 9 am until the time of service. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pastor Jacob Aranza of Our Savior's Church in Lafayette will officiate along with music selections by Dr. Lee Cooke and Jan Cooke. Gerald was born on April 13, 1947 in Lafayette, Louisiana. He was an outstanding athlete competing in baseball and track. He graduated from USL in 1971 with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and then proudly served his country as a Navigator in the United States Air Force until his retirement at the rank of Captain in 1976. After retirement, Gerald and his family lived in Houston, Lafayette, and later in Slidell where they raised their children. More recently, Gerald and Yvonne moved to Covington where he was a dedicated member of Church of The King. He was past president of NAMI Association and served on the Board for a number of years, and he was active in the prison ministry for over 8 years. Gerald was a deeply devoted Christian with a love of family and friends, and he will be dearly missed by all that knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Yvonne Fitzgerald Venable; his son, Paris Ryan Venable; his daughter, Angel Nicole Venable Herod and her husband Bill; three grandchildren, William Allen Herod III (Billy), Brooke Nicole Herod, and Anabelle Lucy Herod; his mother, Evelyn Roger Venable; four sisters, Shirley Wahlberg (Joel), Clara Mayeaux (Mickey), Donna Savoie, and Karen McNamara (Tom); one brother, Clarence Chad Venable (Lorrie); extended family, Bonnie and Guy Hawkins, Beth and Hayward Thibodeaux, Ann Marie and Carroll Gautreaux, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his grandson, Andrew Herod, his father, Clarence "Bill" Venable, his mother-in-law, Lucy "Burl" Fitzgerald, his father-in-law, Clarence Fitzgerald, and two brothers-in-law, Keith Fitzgerald and Michael Savoie. Pallbearers will be Bill Herod, Chad Venable, Guy Hawkins, Mickey Mayeaux, Tom McNamara, and Thad Gautreaux.
