James Edward Ott, age 45, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 6, in New Orleans, Louisiana, after a heroic nineteen-month battle with leukemia and complications from a bone marrow transplant. James was born on May 27, 1968, in St. Joseph, Michigan, to Gloria Gay Bell and the late James Henry Ott. Large in life, James was larger than life itself. A graduate of Grace King High School in Metairie, Louisiana, and Tulane University, he went on to earn his MBA at the University of Texas at Austin. James had a brilliant mind, was gifted with numbers, and was fiercely independent in thought. He was determined to succeed in the world of finance and he thrived as an investment banker and later hedge fund manager, founding Thermo Telecom & Media Partners. He loved finance, playing basketball and photography, and was an avid Saints and Longhorn sports fan. James not only loved life, he was a fighter. He fought for those he loved and cared for, especially his son Jeremy. He fought hard for a life that ended too soon. James is survived by his loving and devoted wife Anne (née Falgoust), his beloved son Jeremy James, his mother Gloria Bell, half-siblings Heidi Ott and Kirk (Nedra) Ott of Buchannan, Michigan, and Linda Benton of Sycamore, Illinois, his uncle Robert (Eleanor) Bell of Niles, Michigan, his former spouse Natalie Ray Ott, and many loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the JL Foundation, whose mission is to assist leukemia and lymphoma patients and their families, 21223 Waterfront East Drive, Maurepas, Louisiana 70449.
