James Myron Smith, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in the comfort of his home. Devoted husband of Marie Soulet Smith for 61 ½ years. Father of four loving daughters, Susan S Mahnke (John), Pamela S Welty (Doug), Sharon S Satter (Edward), & Lynda S McInerney (Kevin). Proud & adoring grandfather of: Jennifer Mahnke Garnand, David Welty, Lauren Mahnke Lair (Adam), Ryan Welty, Christopher Welty, Leslie Satter, James Satter and great granddaughter Lillian (Lily) Garnand. An only child, he was preceded in death by his beloved mother Annie Ruth Jeter Smith. James was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 27, 1930 and spent most of his childhood in the town of Carrollton, Georgia. A true southern gentleman with a kind heart & sweet disposition, he moved to New Orleans as a young teen in the summer of 1946 and completed his education at Warren Easton High School (Class of 1948). He was a resident of New Orleans for over sixty years & resided in Kenner since 2006. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 42 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. Though he never boasted about his accolades, he received many medals & commendations during his devoted military service, including one from President George Bush for his extended service to his country. He retired from Audubon Insurance Group as a Branch Manager & insurance adjuster. For over sixty years, he was a member of the" Modernaires," a social club formed by his Navy buddies & their wives. They met on the first Saturday of every month, sharing many happy & momentous life events together. In addition, he was also a long time member & perennial treasurer of the "Fun for All Club," another social club with numerous friends & fond memories. An avid Saints fan who had season tickets for many years, he won a trip with the team sponsored by WSMB Radio in 1968 after his teenaged daughter described in a letter why her Dad was the "number one Saints fan". He will be remembered for his love of family, friends and life. All were lucky to have had him touch their lives. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. on Monday, January 20, 2014, from 9am until noon. A mass will be held at noon in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Contributions in the name of James Myron Smith may be made to the of LA, 3900 N.
