James Puckette "Jim" Carter, MD, DrPH died peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at the age of 80. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn Harris-Carter and the loving father of James, Jr., Rebecca, and Geoffrey and his wife Sarah. James was the cherished grandfather of Evan, Elias and Casey Carter. Jim is also survived by his elder brother Morris Carter, his niece Dorian Carter, and his former wife Gena Hunter Carter as well as other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Ruth Puckette Carter and Dr. Morris Carter and his sister, Ruth Carter. James was a gentle, kindhearted man that loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, which took him to many cities of the world for both work and leisure, also dancing and listening to Brazilian jazz. Dr. Carter's absence will be felt by all of his many friends, colleagues, patients and former students. Jim was a long-time member of the Bahá'í Faith, having served the local administrative body. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral service at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 7, 2014 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Friday will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS will immediately follow services.
