Michael Wayne Sawyer passed away peacefully on November 24, 2013 at the VA Hospice in Scottsdale, Arizona following a five year battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by brother Tony and sister-in-law Carole. Mike was born in Picayune, Ms. to Cyril Sawyer and Myrtle Penton Sawyer on May 13, 1947. He is preceded in death by father Cyril Sawyer and sister Margaret Sawyer Giardelli. Survivors are mother Myrtle Sawyer Moran, brothers Anthony (Tony) Sawyer and wife Carole of Reno, Nevada and Robert (Bob) Sawyer and wife Mary of Pearl River. Nephews Marck Sawyer of Scottsdale, Az., Nicholas Giardelli of Huntsville, Al., nieces Kelli Sawyer Smith of Longmont, Co.,Victoria Sawyer of Roseville, Ca., Shanna Sawyer of Incline Village, Nv., Melissa Giardelli of Pearl River and Nicole Giardelli of Baton Rouge, La. Grand nieces Jena O'Berry of Pearl River and Jamie Giardelli of Pearl River. Cousins Butch Penton of Slidell, Pete Penton of Lacombe and Cynde Penton Ervin of Pass Christian, MS. Mike lived in the sixth ward and attended the Sixth Ward Junior High School during childhood . He moved to Sacramento, Ca. in 1964 and attended Luther Burbank High while living with brother Tony. Following that, he joined the Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk and voluntarily extended his enlistment for nine months before being transferred to the brown water Navy on River Boat duty in Vietnam . While there Mike was awarded four commendations including the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Stars and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon with One Bronze Star. Following military service Mike lived in Sacramento, Ca. and Reno, Nv. before returning to the sixth ward. He married Joy Krause of Lacombe and lived briefly in Louisiana before getting divorced and relocating to Austin, Tx. and later Nashville, Tn. He relocated to Phoenix, Az. where he spent the last ten years. He was a major follower of LSU and Saints football teams and an avid NASCAR fan on Sundays. There will be a gravesite service at Audobon Charter Oak Cemetary on Saturday March 22, 2014 at 11AM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the in Michael's name or the VFW, Pearl River Chapter.
