Romain "R.J." Joseph Deffes Jr., a veteran who proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the age of 78. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Gloria Folse Deffes. Loving father of Peggy D. Gunther (Jeff) and Raymond J. Deffes Sr. (Brandy). Son of the late Romain and Ellen Deffes Sr. Brother of Adele Gourgues, Shirley McLain and the late Evelyn Henson, Freddie Pfalzgraph and Charlie Pfalzgraph. Proud grandfather of Dustin Deffes and Raymond J. Deffes Jr. Great-grandfather of Cullen Deffes. R.J. was a native of New Orleans, LA and a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before settling in Folsom, LA. He was an honored member of the Graham Washington Masonic Lodge F&AM and enjoyed giving lectures and sharing his knowledge on the history of our American Flag. He will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather and brother, who loved his country and treasured his family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend an evening visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Tuesday, May 6th from 6:00PM - 9:00PM and again on Wednesday morning from 9:00AM - 11:00AM. A Funeral Mass will follow beginning at 11:00AM. Burial with military honors will take place in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
