Shirley "Sherps" Wiemers, a native of New Orleans, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013, at the age of 86. Sherps is a graduate of St. Mary's Dominican College and attended graduate school at the University of Notre Dame. She was a faculty member, coach, administrator and volunteer at St. Mary's Dominican High School for over 50 years. She was honored as a recipient of the Dominican High School Heritage Award for service to the school and as a recipient of the Dominican College Torch Bearer Award, given to an alumna who has distinguished herself through service to the community. She was recognized by the St. Bernard Council on Aging for her many hours of service. Sherps was active and excelled at many sports throughout her life, especially softball, basketball and tennis. She was an avid bowler and served as an officer and board member of the N.O.W.B.A. for many years. Sister of the late Henrietta Wiemers Mancuso (J.D.), Charles Wiemers, Jr. (Mary), Muriel Wiemers Crespo (Joseph), Ludwig Wiemers and Earleen Wiemers. Also survived by her nephew, Michael L. Mancuso, and nieces, Stacey Mancuso Labit (Jason) and Diane Crespo. Predeceased by her parents, Henrietta Arlinghaus Wiemers and Charles H. Wiemers, Sr. Long time friend of Sr. Delia McDonald, O.P. and the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 4640 Canal St. New Orleans, on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be held before the mass beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, (formerly All Faiths). Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Donations to the Shirley "Sherps" Wiemers Scholarship Fund at St. Mary's Dominican High School are preferred.
