Wilfred Dominic Joseph Scheyd, known to his family as "DD", passed away peacefully on January 20, 2014, at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Claire Cox Scheyd, and their 8 children: Glenn (Dovie Dessauer), Wayne (Patti Dugas), Cynthia Caron (John), Fred (Ann Castillon), Greg (Marie Fontana), Kevin, Trisha, and Lori Scheyd. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his father, Frederick Joseph Scheyd, and mother, Anna Tortorich Scheyd, and by his siblings: Marjorie Louise Scheyd and Joseph Merrill Scheyd. He was born and raised in New Orleans, attended Holy Cross High School, and graduated in Accounting from Loyola University. DD was an officer in the U.S. Army Military Police during WWII and was present during the liberation of Paris. He claimed to have contributed to the temporary closing of the Folies Bergere. He was a resident of Lakeview and a member of St. Dominic Parish for much of his life - until Katrina displaced him and his wife. He was formerly a bookkeeper for several of his brother's construction companies, among them Scheyd, Brennan Inc. and Hammond Construction. The Scheyd family would like to thank the women from Serenity Home who helped care for our dad the past two years. Their smiles and hard work are appreciated. Family and friends are invited to the visitation Thursday, January 23rd beginning at 8:30 with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 in the chapel of Jacob Schoen Funeral Home, burial will be private.
