Frank M. Edwards, Jr., was born October 12, 1935 and died April 17, 2014. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Dora Jean Miller Edwards and seven of their children: Alice Edwards Stevens (Alvin); Frank M. Edwards, III (Kathy Sue); Clay Edwards (Dianne); Andrew Edwards (Belinda); Morgan Edwards; John Bel Edwards (Donna); and, Daniel Edwards (Blair), all of Tangipahoa Parish. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Brenda Brister Edwards, 24 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one on the way. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Frank M. Edwards and Lillian Bel Edwards, as well as his son, Christopher Edwards. Frank served as sheriff of Tangipahoa Parish from 1968 to 1980. He also served as a delegate to the 1973 Louisiana Constitutional Convention. In February of this year, the Edwards family was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame museum to honor and commemorate six consecutive generations of elected public servants from present-day Tangipahoa Parish dating back to 1812, and including four generations serving as Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff. He graduated from Amite High School in 1953 and the LSU Law School in 1960. Frank was an attorney for 54 years, and he was active in local and state politics for more than 60 years. He served as Assistant Commissioner of Administration for Governor Edwin Edwards from 1983 to 1986. A lifelong parishioner of St. Helena Catholic Church, Frank was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council 10911. Along with his wife Dora Jean, Frank was active for many years in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul seeking charity and justice for the less fortunate in Tangipahoa Parish. Frank was also a long time member of the Florida Parishes Skeet and Gun Association in Amite, and he reigned as the Amite Oyster King in 2009. Services will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church in Amite on Monday, April 21 with visitation from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the church hall and Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, Frank requested that donations be made to the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA), Society of St. Vincent de Paul, or the hospice of your choice.
