Allen R. Fontenot, retired attorney, died February 3, 2014 at age 93. Born in Mamou, Louisiana, on September 23, 1920, he was a resident of New Orleans for 73 years. In 1937 he was employed in the United States House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. After graduation from George Washington University and Tulane Law School, he served as an Assistant District Attorney for Orleans Parish. He completed the remainder of his distinguished legal career as a partner in the Lemle & Kelleher law firm. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Shakespeare Society of New Orleans, the Wyvern Club, the Paul Morphy Chess Club, the Audubon Golf Club, and the Metairie Country Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fernia and Eliza Fontenot, his brothers Robert and Earl Fontenot, and his beloved wife, Nancy Ross Carothers. Survivors include his son, Allen Ray Fontenot, Jr. of New Orleans, his sister Joy Ortego of Ville Platte, Louisiana, his three grandsons, Gray Carothers Fontenot of Falls Church, Virginia, Christopher Scott Fontenot of Beaverton, Oregon, and Todd Parker Fontenot of Arlington, Virginia, and his three great-grandchildren, Tyler Ross Fontenot, Ryan Martin Fontenot, and Kathleen Anne Fontenot of Falls Church, Virginia. A child of the Depression who overcame adversity and made a good life for himself and his family, a self-made man, an accomplished artist and writer, a gentleman and a scholar who never lost the love of learning, Allen epitomized the American dream and was a paragon of ethical behavior in his profession. Private services were held in Batesville, Mississippi on Friday, February 7, 2014.
