October 14, 2014

Hi there - my name's Elizabeth Winslow, and I was a Red Cross volunteer during Sept/Oct 2005, after Katrina. Jan and I stayed in touch for a while, and Ron and I had some good conversations. I couldn't find email addresses for their children, so thought I'd post these reminiscenses here.

Moments in depressing: I'm supposed to be in NOLA this month, and wanted to reconnect with Jan Tyree and her husband Ron - but especially Jan- who I really bonded with during my Katrina disaster work.

I'd noticed I hadn't gotten a reply to cards the past couple of Christmases.

Guess that happens when you end up dead at 57 and 70, respectively, inside of the past 16 months. Thanks Google.

So for the record - Jan Tyree was awesome. She had moved around a lot with Ron because of his work, and had some great stories of living all over the country when her kids were small. They were retiring to Slidell, to a nice house with a boat slip in the back, and figured they could rent it out to pay their expenses, when Katrina hit.

Jan took a shine to me, and I to her. I loaded her up with as many cases of Heater Meals as I remotely ethically could. She loaded me up with flood-damaged matryoshka dolls from a stint in Germany, and the like. She always wanted to give me things... I actually have a photo of myself in Changi Airport, Singapore, when I was pregnant with Tristan, wearing a super-preppy shirt she'd brought me that she thought I'd like. One of my favorite pics from my time in Slidell is of Jan giving me a big hug on my last ERV run... her husband told me I'd better catch her because her daughter was named Elizabeth, and I'd meant a lot.

So, RIP, Jan. And RIP, Ron. And if y'all did get any looters, I hope you were able to chuck them to the alligators in the canal out back.
