Aline Squires Obituary
Aline Smith Squires died on Good Friday, March 25, 2016 at St. James Place in Baton Rouge, LA. She was the daughter of Cassie Carruth Smith and Gipson Myers Smith, born January 11, 1921 in McNary, LA and raised in Glenmora, LA. She entered McNeese State University in its first freshman class and was a member of its first graduating class two years later. She went on to study biology and math, earning a B.A. in education from Southwest Louisiana Institute (now UL) at Lafayette in 1943. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and served as a resident advisor. She began her teaching career at Rayne High School and went on to teach biology and physics at Bolton High School in Alexandria, LA. While there, she was the sponsor of the cheerleading squad. After WWII, she married Mortimer Squires Jr, the best friend of her brother, Glendon. They were married for 68 years until his death in 2015. She and Mort started off their married life and family in New Iberia. In 1953, they moved to New Orleans where they were residents for 52 years, except for three years in The Hague, Holland. In the mid-60's, Aline returned to school to learn the "new math" and taught at T.H. Harris Junior High in Metairie for many years. She and Mort were active members of Oak Park and later Lakeview Presbyterian churches. She loved to sew, work in her garden and play bridge. Everyone loved her Chicken Cordon Bleu and Cheese Rounds. After Katrina took their home, they relocated to Baton Rouge and became residents of Village Woods and Williamsburg Retirement communities and members of First Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Emma Ruth Trahan (John), an infant sister Nona Lee Smith, and four brothers, Bernas (Juanita), Glendon (Dorothy), Charles Ray and Jack Smith, whose wife, Bonnie is the last surviving member of their generation. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Robert Glendon Squires (Pearl Landrum Squires), Susan Squires Cresap (Michael Patrick Cresap) and Richard Howard Squires (Yvette Brunet Squires.) Her grandchildren include Laura Squires Meza (Darryl Dan Meza Jr), Eric Glendon Squires (Veronica Cordero Squires), Michael Barrett Cresap (Deanna Daily Cresap), Jeanne Cresap McLellan (Clark Norman McLellan III), Douglas Glendon Cresap (Renee Tujague Cresap), Jennifer Elizabeth Squires (fiancé Josh Carapina) and Elizabeth Ann Squires. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren (as of yet)-Thomas James, Madison Rose and Andrew Glendon Meza; Aubrey Michelle Squires; Nathan Daniel and Michael Cooper Cresap; Clark Norman IV and Liam Daniel McLellan; and Mia Claire, Ava Marie and Carter Douglas Cresap. Our family would like to thank Inez Tate who gave seven years of devoted daily care and companionship to both our mother and our father. Our family would also like to thank the entire staff of St. James Place and Hospice of Baton Rouge, especially Suzie Boudinot, RN, who made her passing as peaceful as possible during these final months. Following a 10:00 AM visitation, a memorial service is planned for 11:00 AM Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Dunham Chapel of First Presbyterian Church (763 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, LA), officiated by the Reverend Doctor Gerrit Dawson. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. James Place Foundation, First Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Baton Rouge or the Methodist Children's Home. We will miss this beautiful, lovely and kind mother and grandmother who was always more concerned for everyone else's well-being than her own.
