Alfred Dudley Obituary

Alfred E. Dudley (Al)

NAPLES, FL: Alfred E. Dudley (Al), the loving husband for 65 years of Lois Dudley, passed away on April 12, 2013 in Naples Fla.

Born on September 12, 1928 in Millersville Ohio, Al was the son of John and Mary Dudley. Al was predeceased by his daughter Barbara Ann Dudley. A former resident of Fremont Ohio, Greenwich, CT and Ridgefield, Ct, he resided in Naples for almost 25 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Jack Dudley of Danbury, CT and Richard and Bonnie Dudley of Rowayton, CT; four grandchildren and their families including two great grandchildren: Chris and Kathryn Dudley and their daughter Cameron Jane of Fairfield, CT, Erin Dudley Smith, Gordon Smith and their son Jackson Smith of Jupiter Fl., Lauren Dudley and her fiancé Graham Stephens of New York City and Katherine Dudley McGrath and John McGrath of Darien CT. Al is survived by several family members including John and Jean Dudley of Illinois, Jean Gonya and Mary Gabel, both of Ohio.

He is also predeceased by three brothers, Harold, William, and Richard Dudley, two sisters Edna Schade and Delores Schade and his daughter-in-law Nancy Jane Dudley.

Al can easily be described as a self made man. He rose through the ranks of the Union Carbide Corporation, starting in the Eveready Battery factory in Fremont, Ohio. Through numerous promotions, he advanced to become a Senior Vice President of their Consumer Products Division in New York City, responsible for marketing and manufacturing. But Al was not finished. In the leveraged buyout heyday of the 1980's, he led the acquisition of the Consumer Products Division, which included household brands such as Glad, Prestone, Simonize and STP. The result of this acquisition was the First Brands Corporation with Al as the Chairman, CEO and President. After nearly doubling the value of the company, First Brands went public becoming a Fortune 500 Corporation and recognized as one of the most successful leveraged buyouts of its era by Business Week Magazine. First Brands was eventually acquired by The Clorox Corporation, at which time he retired to Naples Fl.

In retirement, Al was an avid golfer often seen on the links several times a week. He was a member of both Audubon CC in Naples and Silver Spring CC in Ridgefield. Al was dedicated to his family and a man of deep faith. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist in Naples and St. Mary's in Ridgefield.

Visiting hours will be at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Rd in Naples on Monday, April 15 from 5:00-7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, April 16 at St. John the Evangelist Church at 625 111th Ave North, Naples at 1:00pm. An additional memorial service will be held in Ridgefield Ct. at a later date. He will be laid to rest next to his daughter Barbara in Millersville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in his name to the charity of the donor's choice.

Sorry to hear of Uncle Al's passing. I remember quite a bit about him while growing up in Fremont. He and his family were always at the large reunions back in the 50's out in Millersville. I also remember of him and his younger brother Dick playing softball for Helena Lumber at Roger Young Park. He was a very good business man and a great Catholic family man. He will be missed. I am sure that he is in heaven with his daughter Barbara.

Jack - Please convey Alix and my heartfelt sympathies to your mother, Lois, your brother, and of course yourself. Your father was an incredible man. Many of us are in his debt for his leadership and foresight; and it was a privilege to work for him at Carbide and First Brands. Joe and Alix Furey
