FREMONT: Jean Vollmar, 82, of Fremont, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning at Mercy St. Vincent's Hospital, Toledo, OH.
She was born May 16, 1930 at home in Benton Harbor, MI, the daughter of Henry and Bernice (Dalman) Cook. She attended 6 different grade schools in Michigan before moving to Fremont, meeting many new friends along the way. Upon moving to Fremont at age 13, McPherson Blvd. became her new home. It was at this time that she began to go by her middle name "Jean". She remained in Fremont through elementary and high school graduating in the class of 1948 from Fremont Ross. Before starting her married life she worked for the telephone company.
She married the love of her life, Jim Vollmar on September 10, 1949 in Sandusky, OH. They met at school while dancing, one of her favorite hobbies. Jean and her husband Jim were the owners and operators of Wightman's Grove Summer Resort for 23 years, a place where they made many friends. Mrs. Vollmar also worked for Lytle's Clothing Company for many years helping them with their annual sales and she also worked at the Board of Elections.
Jean was a member of First United Church of Christ where she served on several committees. In most recent years she enjoyed quilting with friends in the "Sew n' So's making several quilts. She held a lifetime membership with the V.F.W
. and was active in her younger years with Riley Mothers' Study Club at Riley School. Jean was an avid bowler with the "Little Debbie's", a hobby of 30 years until 2010. She still enjoyed meeting the "bowling girls" for lunch on Wednesdays, along with standing lunch dates with her many friends. She also volunteered at the food pantry for 10 years alongside her daughter Bonnie, as well as volunteering her time at Share & Care and anywhere else her help was needed especially for her friends, church and schools.
Exercise was an important aspect of her life and an opportunity to meet new friends through "The Fat Farm" exercise class at Church, Jazzercise and for the last 10 years has gone to Green Springs "Villa" to swim 3 times a week.
Surviving are her sons, Thomas (JoAnne) Vollmar, James R. (Cindy) Vollmar both of Fremont, OH, Richard (Sandy) Vollmar of Toledo, OH; daughter, Bonnie (Gary) Overmyer of Fremont, OH; grandchildren, Michelle, Ryan, Sam, Wesley (Dorie) Vollmar, Lilly Overmyer (Christopher Riehl); step-grandsons, Justin Leech and Jason Seigel; step-greatgranddaughter, Camryn Leech; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim on July 21, 2006; brothers and sister-in-laws, Charles and Doreen Cook, Paul and Bernie Cook; daughter-in-law, Barbara Vollmar; and granddaughter, Christine Jean Vollmar; sister-in-law, Donna Wilson; brothers-in-law, Frank Roe and Robert Vollmar.
Jean will be remembered for her positive outlook on life and a woman devoted to her family and friends.
Visitation will take place Friday, March 22, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8P.M. at Keller-Ochs-Koch-Mason Funeral & Cremation Service, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, Ohio. Additional visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday from the First United Church of Christ Fremont with Funeral Services beginning at 11:00 A.M, Pastor Elaine Bast will officiate. Burial will follow at Faust Cemetery Fremont, Ohio.
