Airman First Class, Nathan Edward Smith

RAMSEIN AIR FORCE BASE GERMANY: Airman First Class, Nathan Edward Smith, 21, of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, passed away April 4, 2012 in Germany resulting from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

On May 3, 1990 in Fremont, he was born to Rex and Tammy (Smith) Smith. He married Alyssa Kerns of Fremont on March 5, 2011.

He is survived by his wife, Alyssa; parents, Rex and Tammy; and a sister, Erica Smith all of Tiffin; grandparents, Frank and Rita Smith of Altona, IL; father and mother in law, Jon and Pam Kerns; brother in law, Aaron Kerns, and sister in law, Emily Kerns all of Fremont; aunts and uncles, Vicki and Bob Murdock of Oneida, IL; Ronnie Smith of Oneida, IL; Bruce and Cindy Smith of Altona, IL; Wayne and Christina Smith of Morton, IL; Fred and Helen Smith, Alfie (Sue) Smith, Jim Smith, Doug and Kathy Smith, Kathy and Steve Miles, Scott Smith, Cindy Smith and Jerry Smith all of Fremont; and Rose and Gary Chamberlain of Vickery, OH.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald and Stella Smith.

Nate was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a 2008 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and from the Tech Center in Fremont. On April 5, 2011 he entered the United States Air Force and completed basic training in Lackland Air Force Base, TX. He was assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas where he attended the Power Production Apprentice Technical Training School. Upon completion, he was assigned to the 435th Construction and Training Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Germany as an Aircraft Arresting Systems Depot Maintenance Apprentice. He was deploying to Bulgaria on Sunday, April 1, 2012.

He made friends with everyone and always wanted to help others. Even after his accident, his organs were donated to others, fulfilling their lives. He enjoyed video gaming, computers, camping and sitting around a campfire with family and friends, sharing stories. Nate was always looking for an adventure, traveling in any direction on his "Epic Adventures" while in Tiffin with friends and introducing this to new friends while in Europe.

A mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 13, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to mass. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may visit and share stories with the family on Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 2-8 P.M. at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 419-447-2424.

The family requests memorial contributions may be made to Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, 901 E. Northwest, Suite 405, Washington, D.C. 20004 or the Nathan Smith Memorial Fund.
