FREMONT: Thomas "Tom" Andrew Pettiford, Sr., 86, of Fremont, OH passed away on October 5, 2012 at Bethesda Care Center. He was born on May 8, 1926 in Fremont to Howard L. and Alta B. (Morgan) Pettiford.
Tom graduated from Fremont Ross High School in 1947 after serving over two years in the U.S. Navy during WWII. While in the Navy he completed Motor Machinist Service School at Hampton Institute in Hampton, VA, where he graduated in the top ten percent of his class as a Motor Machinist Mate 3/C. He was transferred to Bremerton, Washington Navy yard and then the Attu, Alaska (the Aleutian Islands). He was awarded the American Area Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal.
After returning home and graduating High School Tom worked for fourteen years at the Fremont Foundry where for seven years he was President of Local Union 1915 United Steel Workers of American. He was the youngest Local Union President in District #29, headquartered in Detroit, MI. Tom was also Quality Control Supervisor at L.O.F. Woodall Industries where he worked for eleven years. He retired from Memorial Hospital in 1996 due to a stroke. He was the first hired to help get the Care-A-Van started in 1985. Tom was a member of First Baptist Missionary Church in Fremont and a member of the NAACP.
Tom married Barbara Davis on November 22, 1969 and she survives. Also surviving are, children, Cheryl Pettiford Agnew, Cleveland, OH, Thomas Pettiford, Jr., Fremont, OH, Terrence Keith (Joe Ann) Pettiford, Sr., Las Vegas, NV, Anthony "Tony" (Alisha) Gant, Maumee, OH; step children, Charlene Fisher, Janie Davis, Barbara Yvette Fisher, Deborah Wade, Rhonda (Willie) Brown, Sammy Davis, Jr., all of Fremont, OH; daughter-in-law, Ursula Pettiford; fourteen grandchildren, six step grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; special niece, Barbara Turner and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Pettiford; siblings, Robert L. Pettiford, John E. Pettiford, Elizabeth "Betty" Roberts, Adrienne Yates, Anne K. Watts and Barbara Jane Harris.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Missionary Church, 1697 Dickinson St, Fremont, OH. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Pastor William Holmes officiating. Burial will take place on Thursday, October 11, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion and VFW.
