GIBSONBURG: Barry Lee Gries, age 67, of Gibsonburg, Ohio passed away suddenly on Monday (November 12, 2012) in James Island, South Carolina. He was born on September 2, 1945 in Bradner, Ohio to the late William Herman & Alberta Mary (Snyder) Gries. He married Sandra Kay Traut on November 27, 1965 in Fostoria, Ohio.
Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years Sandy; son, Terry (Raylene) Gries of Johns Island, South Carolina; daughter, Micheale (John) Cutcher of Gibsonburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Alexander, Johanna, Chaz, Wesley; sisters, Carol Moore and Betty Lou Duncan.
Barry retired from Disney ABC WTVG Channel 13 in Toledo where he was Director of Engineering for 44 years. He was honored the day he retired in April 2011 when the television station named the transmitter tower after him calling it the Gries Tower. In 1979 he and Sandy built Bill's Whippy Dip (now Speed Trap Diner) in Woodville, Ohio. After retiring he and Sandy started to spend time at the James Island County Park in Charleston, South Carolina where they would help with the holiday festival of lights. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Gibsonburg, had his private pilot's license, was an amateur ham radio operator, enjoyed traveling to Walt Disney World where he was a retired cast member and was an avid dog lover who will be missed by his dogs Max, Emy & Daisy.
Friends will be received from 2-8 PM Monday (November 19, 2012) at Barndt Funeral Home in Wayne, Ohio with additional visitation from 9-10 AM Tuesday (November 20, 2012) at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Gibsonburg where a Christian Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday with Father Ted Miller officiating. Burial will be in Graham Cemetery near Wayne, Ohio with a funeral luncheon to follow back at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
