Mervin J. Keegan

GREEN SPRINGS: Mervin J. Keegan, 98, of Green Springs, died at his home on Thursday, March 20, 2014.

Mr. Keegan was born in Vickery on February 15, 1916 to Frederick and Bessie (Opper) Keegan. He attended Riley School.

"Mervie" enjoyed stock car racing and tractor pulling. At the age of 95, he competed in the tractor pulling contest and won a trophy for the oldest puller and was 1st in his class. In 2013, Mervin was inducted into the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame. Mr. Keegan was first a farmer, however, he had worked at Herbrand and then for many years was the Green Springs Street Superintendent.

On December 11, 1940, he married Alice Louise Swartz. She preceded him in death on June 7, 1998. He was a WWII Army veteran.

Mervin was inducted into the Army in 1941 - 1945 serving during WW11. 148th INF. Company B. Reaching the rank of Staff Sargent serving in the Southern Phillipines, Luzon and Northern Solomons. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with 3 Bronze stars per Wd Go 33-45 American Defense Service Medal, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Keegan, Ronald Keegan, both Fremont, David Keegan, Green Springs; five daughters, Karen Bauman, Green Springs, Sandra (Paul) Danklefsen, Fremont, Darlene Hollis, Fremont, Cinda Stout, Green Springs and Kimberly (Michael) Clevinger, Republic; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lytle "Gug" Keegan in Green Springs also survives.

Mervie was proceeded in death by his eldest son, Daniel J. Keegan in 2010; brothers, Harvey, Ivan, Rollie and Alva Keegan; and sisters, Voledia Otto, Opal Hoke, Helen Nye, Doris Franks and Bertha Cook; two siblings, Sterling and Eileen are also deceased.

Visitation will be on Tues., Mar. 25, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8:00 pm at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 South Main St., Clyde. The funeral will be on Wednesday, March 25, 2014 at 10:30 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens with military honors.
