Barbara R. Hjertberg

Barbara R. Hjertberg, 85, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012.

She was the wife of retired Maj. Frederick Hjertberg. Formerly of Potomac, Md., they came to Arizona in 1976. Her parents, Col. Russell F. Albert and Regina Hoben, of Elizabethtown and Hardinsburg, are buried at Arlington Cemetery, as is her husband.
Barbara lived in Germany with her parents after World War II and traveled extensively in France, Italy and Switzerland. She graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., and did postgraduate studies at Marywood College in Pennsylvania. She was an elementary school teacher, realtor and was in mortgage banking.

She was the descendant of a number of pioneer founders of Elizabethtown such as Jacob Van Meter, Louis du Bois, Col. John Hardin, Hardin Thomas and Washington Smith.

Barbara is survived by three stepchildren, Consie Dahl, Holly Cool and F. Eric Hjertberg.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at Vi at Grayhawk, North Scottsdale, Ariz., where she resided in skilled nursing.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of the Valley, Scottsdale, Ariz.
