Donald Gene Young, 81, of Glendale, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Washington, D.C. and was a member of Glendale Christian Church and Glendale Lions Club. He graduated from Berea College with two master's degrees from Western Carolina University in chemistry and education and was a chemistry professor at several colleges in North Carolina and Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Navy
where he was the ship photographer on the USS Leyte.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elvis Hatfield Young and Helen LaVone Young; and a brother, David Young.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Robertson Young; three daughters, Pamela Young of Glendale, Laurie Swann of Black Mountain, N.C., and Jeannie Young of Mount Sterling; one brother, Robert Young of Texas; five grandchildren, Jeremiah (Becky) Swann, Nicholas (Niki) Swann and Whitney (Michael) Swann Harvey, all of Black Mountain, Rachel Ward of Asheville, N.C., and Zeke Ward of Swannanoa, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Ellen, Julia, Maggie and Jude Swann.
The funeral is at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Glendale Christian Church Chapel with the Rev. David Atkisson and Brother Mike Bell officiating. Burial follows in Glendale Christian Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
