Donald Gordon Scamihorn, 53, of Elizabethtown, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Hospice Inpatient Care at Norton Hospital in Louisville.
Until his death, Don's greatest joy was spending time with his family. And it was their greatest joy to spend time with him.
He often talked about his hometown of Brooklyn, Ind., and was a graduate of Martinsville High School, class of 1979. He was married for 31 years to the love of his life, Dawn Polston Scamihorn, and they lived in Brooklyn until 1995 when they moved to Elizabethtown.
Don retired in 2012 from the Department of Defense Fort Knox Fire Department as a captain after 24 years of devoted service.
He kept to his values of work hard, share what you have and do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.
With the loss of both parents, Gordon Donald and Judith Kay Scamihorn, he knew great sadness.
Now those he has left behind know the same sorrow. He will be missed by his four sons, Donald Gordon Scamihorn Jr., Nathan Michael (Elizabeth Crowe) Scamihorn and Owen Garrett Scamihorn, all of Elizabethtown, and Matthew Tyler (Heather) Scamihorn of Radcliff; his daughter, Brittney Dawn Scamihorn of Elizabethtown; and his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Carson, Brody, Aleah, Ethan, Evan, Ty, Zackary and Abigail. He also leaves behind aunts, uncles and cousins, friends, and co-workers who he dearly loved.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home with Dr. James Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and continue after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
