Georgia Lee "Granny" Whelan, 90, of Brandenburg, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at her home.
She was born March 21, 1922 in Rhodelia, to the late John Carlisle and Mary Agnes Greenwell Manning.
She was a longtime member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Flaherty where she served in many different capacities including the Altar Society, religious education teacher, Eucharistic minister and lector and in the service bereavement community. Most recently, she has been a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Brandenburg.
Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy "Doc" Whelan; three children, Virginia Lou, Thomas Lee and Cora Ann Whelan; a sister, Dorothy Rhodes; a daughter-in-law, Donna Ruark Whelan; and a great-granddaughter, Anna Katherine Mahon.
She is survived by three children, Joseph Whelan of Dry Ridge, Alice (Daniel) Mahon of Brandenburg and Geraldine (Porter) Hager of Flaherty; eight grand-children; 12 great-grandchildren and one on the way; she was expecting her first great-great-grandson; and a special family friend, Theresa Sipes.
A Mass of Christian burial is at 11 a.m. EST Thursday, Feb. 14, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Flaherty with the Rev. Kevin Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday EST and continues at 9 a.m. EST Thursday at Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home in Brandenburg. A prayer service is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
