Lewis Emery Fite Jr., 90, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Ribolt, passed away Monday afternoon, Feb. 25, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Louisville.
He was known to family and friends as "Les" Fite.
He was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Lewis County, a son of the late Lewis E. Fite Sr. and Cora Marie Logan. He was delivered by his aunt, Hattie Hardyman, a mid-wife, at their log cabin in "Happy Hallow," Fites Hallow.
Lewis went to Tolesboro School prior to the family moving to War, W.Va., where he attended Big Creek High School.

Captain Lewis E. Fite Jr. was a World War II
decorated veteran. He received the Purple Heart
and Bronze Star
with valor, combat arms badges and other awards received during his years of service to his country. He also served in Korea during the Korean War and he served during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Fite was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Doreen Lee Fite; one brother, Peter Thomas Fite; and three sisters, Hattie Pursglove, Dessie Matthews and Callie Bittner.
Lewis is survived by his wife of 65 years, Una Daphne Newland of Elizabethtown; a son, Lewis E. (Kim) Fite III of Elizabethtown; a daughter, Barbara L. (Charles) Dahl of Elizabethtown; a brother, Franklin D. (Peggy) Fite of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren, Rhiannon (Jason) Reams, Margorie (Andrew) Schory, Amelia (Mark) Abell, Alexandre (Sharon) Fite, Denise Fite Yurdakul, Aimee (Daniel) Parry and Jennifer (Dale) Doss; and 14 great-grandchildren, Michelle, Tayla, Lexy, Christopher, Natalie, Brooklyn, Alyssa, Aden, Ben, Kaitlyn, Emery, Desdemona, Cole and Rylie. He also leaves behind many other family members and friends who mourn his passing.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Manakee Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Chaplain Otto Ballou and Brent Matthews officiating. Burial, with military honors, follows at 1 p.m. at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.
