Mattie Gertrude "Gertie" Underwood Willett, 94, of New Haven, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at her residence.
She was born May 1, 1918, in Gleanings, the daughter of the late Thomas and Matilda Elizabeth Martin Underwood. She was a member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven. She was a homemaker who loved her children and her extended family.
She also was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Albert Willett; one son, Joseph Donald "Duck" Willett; one brother, Olden Underwood; and one sister, Lucille Price Willett Simms.
She is survived by five sons, Freddie Willett of Holy Cross, Francis "Carter" Willett of Bardstown and Johnny Willett, Wayne Willett and Randy Willett, all of New Haven; six daughters, Martha Smith of New Haven, Carol Masterson and Jeannie Nalley, both of Louisville, Nancy Plouvier Ward of Hodgenville, Shirley Ann Cooper of Lawrenceburg and Ruthie Willett Forgie of Apollo, Pa.; a special caregiver, Marcie Weller of Hodgenville; 25 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial for Mattie Gertrude "Gertie" Underwood Willett is at 11 a.m. Monday, April 29, at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven with the Rev. Troy Overton officiating. Burial follows in St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church Cemetery in New Hope.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and continues from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven. A prayer service is at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
