Roy Clifford Buckles, 84, of Elizabethtown, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Thomson Hood Veteran's Center in Wilmore.
He was born in Glendale, May 9, 1928, to the late Albert and Eva Owens Buckles. He was a graduate of Glendale High School, where he was a star basketball player. He was inducted into the Army in 1950 and sent to Frankfort, Germany, in 1951. He worked at the base post office and played basketball all over Europe. He loved sports and was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. He was employed by Addie S. French Plumbing and Heating for many years. He was a farmer by nature and farmed from 1974 to 2003. He was a member of Glendale Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Marion, Owen and Robert; and one sister, Evelyn Shelman.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hilda Buckles; a daughter, Carol Buckles Johnson of Elizabethtown; two grandchildren, Micah Roy (Allison) Johnson of Lexington and Darcy Johnson of Elizabethtown; two brothers, John Buckles of Elizabethtown and Bill (Linda) Buckles of Glendale; and two sisters, Molly Jane (Robert) Bell of Louisville and Wanda Lee (Ronnie) Knox of Elizabethtown.
The funeral is at noon Monday, Oct. 8, at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with the Rev. Chuck Walker and Brother Mike Bell officiating.
A graveside service will be private.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home.
