Thomas Bethel Vance

Thomas Bethel Vance, 92, of Elizabethtown, traded his earthly life for eternal life Monday, March 25, 2013, at Helmwood Health Care in Elizabethtown.

Mr. Vance was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Upton. He graduated from Upton High School in 1938. In 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps at Camp Atterbury, Ind. A World War II veteran, he served in the Pacific with the 842nd Engineer Aviation Battalion, 2nd Medical Detachment, 5th Air Force. He was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Leyte Island, Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning to the states, Mr. Vance used his GI bill to attend the University of Kentucky where he became a registered pharmacist. Mr. Vance served the Elizabethtown community for more than 35 years as the pharmacist/manager of Taylor Drug Store. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and a Kentucky Colonel.

Mr. Vance was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Mary B. Skaggs Vance; a stepmother, Maude Brackett Vance; two brothers, Garland Vance and Edwin Lee Vance; and one sister, Lovetta Vance.

He is survived by three daughters, Terri Davis (Tim) of Elizabethtown, Debbie Jaggers (Dell) of Nicholasville and Mary Beth Franklyn of Elizabethtown; and two sisters, Wilma King of Louisville and Sue Wise (Posey) of Elizabethtown. Mr. Vance was blessed with six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Friday, March 29, at Manakee Funeral Home in Upton. Burial, with military honors, follows in Upton Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
