William Francis Murphy

William Francis Murphy, 76, of Elizabethtown, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at his home.

Born in Paterson, N.J., he was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, in 1960. He was a lieutenant colonel having retired in 1986 after 30 years of service with both the Army and later with the Kentucky National Guard. He served two tours in Vietnam.

On June 25, 1960, he married his wife, Geraldine Ann Henneberry, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Vailsburg, Newark, N.J. Together they lived in New Jersey, Germany, Georgia, Kansas, California and for more than 25 years in Kentucky.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Corbin where he was involved in many church activities. In addition, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and USMA Rifle team and he enjoyed woodworking and reading.

Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by a son, William F. Murphy Jr., on June 15, 1987; his parents, Donal J. and Margaret Goldsmith Murphy; and a brother, Donal J. Murphy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Geraldine Ann Murphy; three daughters, Patricia M. Grudzielanek and her husband, Donald, of Louisville, Kathleen Murphy of Elizabethtown and Gerry Anne Murphy of Louisville; a son, retired commander Michael G. Murphy and his wife, Belen, of Alameda, Calif.; two grandchildren, Michele A. Grudzielanek Wilson and her husband, Nicholas, and Stephanie Grudzielanek, all of Louisville; two nephews, Kevin Murphy of New Jersey and Larry Murphy and his wife, Paula, and their two children, all of North Carolina; and a special cousin, Mary Braun and her husband, Larry, of Maryland.

A funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Corbin. Burial, with military honors, follows in Pine Hill Cemetery in Corbin.

Visitation is at 6 p.m. Monday at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home in Corbin. A Rosary devotion service is at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
