William James "Bill" Todd, 83, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 4, 2013. He was a native of Jefferson City, Mo., and a member of St. James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown, where he volunteered many years with St. James Elementary School's intramural basketball program.
In 1948, Bill joined the U.S. Army
and later was employed with the federal civil service on Fort Knox. He served two years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Saudi Arabia and retired from civil service in 1981. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from the University of Kentucky in 1984 at the age of 54. His love of music permeated his life. Bill was a member of various musical groups and played guitar and keyboard at senior centers and nursing homes in Hodgenville and Elizabethtown. He is fondly remembered playing music and dancing with family and friends on the patio at the Todd family home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Franklin and Luna Opal Hendricks Todd.
Bill is survived by his eight children and their spouses; Bill Todd of Louisville, Bob and Martha Todd of Louisville, Jim and Barbara Todd of Elizabethtown, Mary Todd and David Neri of Louisville, John and Laurie Todd of Glendale, Patty Todd Lucas and Freddie Lucas of Elizabethtown, Janice Todd Crawford and John Crawford of Elizabethtown and Paul Todd of Elizabethtown; 23 grandchildren; and three sisters, Betty Rader of Centertown, Mo., Pauline Simms of St. Louis, Mo.; and Patsy Lynch of Florida.
A funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, at St. James Catholic Church. Burial follows in St. James Cemetery in Elizabethtown.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and continues from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown where there is a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. today.
