James Earl "Jim" Downs Jr., 72, of Rineyville, a beloved father and devoted Christian, passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014.

He was a proud member of the U.S. Army, where he served with honor and distinction during the Vietnam War. After his time in the service, he continued to serve his country as a civil service worker for more than 25 years. After his retirement, he was the owner of Downs Construction. He also was a long-standing member of Rineyville Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Earl Downs Sr. and Mary Riggs Carey, and two sisters, Maurita Ann Wynn and Norma Turner England.

Survivors include his children, Michael Downs (Angela), Steven Downs (Jodi), Lisa Downs Osborne (Jason); two stepchildren, Melissa Metcalfe and Allison Blair (Keith); his siblings, Barbara Redman (Donald), Joseph Downs (Gloria), Thomas R. Downs (Paula) and Rita Keene (Joseph); and 11 beautiful and loving grandchildren.

At his request, his body was donated for research to the University of Louisville Medical School to further efforts to find a cure for his disease, corticobasal degeneration.

A memorial service in his honor is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at Rineyville Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Shacklette officiating.

Visitation begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
