C. Alex Edelen, 97, of Vine Grove, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Atria Senior Assisted Living Community in Elizabethtown.

He was born June 16, 1915, in Flaherty, the youngest child of Frederick Garland and Annette Louise Craycroft Edelen. He was predeceased by three brothers and five sisters.

He was educated at St. Joseph School for Boys in Bardstown and the University of Kentucky. As a teenager, he was one of the farm boys hired to stock the gold vault at Fort Knox. During World War II, he served with honors in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a MASH medic in the Pacific. After operating Lyon Funeral Home in Campbellsville, Alex moved back to Vine Grove to partner with James Nelson, establishing Nelson-Edelen Funeral Home. Later, Owen Bennett joined them as a partner. He married Helen Belt of Dawson Springs on June 27, 1941. She established Helen's Flowers in 1952. Helen died in 1975. Later, he married Dorothy Gregory of Miami, Fla., and after her death married Dorothy Fisher of Oshkosh, Wis. They lived in St. James City, Fla., until her death in 1995.  He came home to Kentucky and enjoyed his retirement making his "rounds" every day on his scooter while wearing his plastic Dodgers helmet.

Alex was an avid bridge player, fisherman, basketball and baseball fan (UK, U of L and Cincinnati) and loved to build things. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a lifelong member of St. Brigid Catholic Church where he was an usher and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Alex spent his last years with the loving care of the folks at the Atria retirement home.

Alex is survived by three children, a daughter, Alexis Barrett and her husband Jim of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; two sons, Doug Edelen and his wife, Joan, of Vine Grove and Dave Edelen and his wife, Alice, of Sunset, Texas; grandson, Jim Barrett III of Spartanburg, S.C.; granddaughter Meagan Edelen of Jackson, Tenn.; and two great grandchildren, Bailey and Baxter Barrett.

A Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Vine Grove with the Rev. Daniel L. Lincoln officiating. Burial will follow in St. Brigid Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Vine Grove. There is a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
