Donald Duwayne Holbrook, 52, of Bolivar, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018, at his home.

Donald was born into a military family Aug. 20, 1965, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Ancil "Happy" and Irene Welsch Holbrook.

"Don" or "Donnie" was the son of a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, which led them to live in various places around the world. As a result of his mother being of German heritage and his father being stationed in Germany, Don was fluent in both German and English. Following in his father's footsteps, Don joined the U.S. Army in 1984 after graduating from North Hardin High School in Radcliff.

Don worked as a signal support system specialist and excelled quickly. He was the first amongst his cohort to be promoted to sergeant after graduation from basic training and AIT.

Soon thereafter, Don was transferred to Bolivar to serve as an Army recruiter for Southwest Missouri and received an honorable discharge in 1991. He became a stepfather and established a local business utilizing his skills in machine repair and electronics. He opened Bolivar Vacuum in January 1995 and continued the business for 22 years until his death.

Don's son, Hayden Holbrook, was born in December 1995. Don and Hayden maintained a strong relationship. He made certain they spent time with one another every week and communicated multiple times a day, regardless of what they had going in their lives. They were genuinely, best friends.

Don had many hobbies including collecting coins, eBay merchandising, gardening and landscaping with his girlfriend, target shooting and fishing. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his son. He undeniably was proud of Hayden and honored to be his father.

Don was primarily soft spoken and had a gentle demeanor. However, he never resisted engaging in friendly banter with those he cared for. He also enjoyed debating political issues with nearly everyone he knew ranging from customers, old friends or even acquaintances on social media. Giving those he loved a "hard time" always was something he enjoyed and was very good at. He will always be remembered for his mischievously playful antics.

Donnie was a loving son, father and friend. His tender heart and compassion left a mark on all who knew him, and he will be forever cherished and remembered as the "Vacuum guy" or "Sewing Machine Fix-it-All." His love, unconditional support and devotion to being a father and friend are evident in Hayden who takes great pride in being Don's son.

Donald is preceded in death by his brother, Jurgën Welsch of Germany.

He is survived by his son, Hayden Holbrook of Springfield, Missouri; his parents, Happy and Irene Holbrook of Radcliff; and his long-time girlfriend, Kalyn Rogers of Camdenton, Missouri.
