The Rev. James William Vessels, 88, of Elizabethtown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at his home. In 1966 he was the founding pastor of Open Door Assembly Church on Wilson Road in Elizabethtown and continued to pastor there until 2003.
He also was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by two wives, Loretta Vessels and Beulah Vessels; his parents, Ozzy and Eleanor French Vessels; three brothers, Ozzy Jr., Billy and Dutch Vessels; and three sisters, Stella Keplinger, Lucy Reassor and Viola Burton. Survivors include three sons, Kenny Vessels, Randy Vessels and Roman Trujillo; two daughters, Martha Joyce Butticci and Bobbie Ann Clenney; one sister, Barbara Thomas; two brothers, Charles Cotton Vessels and Sid Vessels; and 28 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral is at noon Wednesday at Open Door Assembly Church, with Pastor Alfred Daves officiating. Burial will follow in Gospel Kingdom Campground Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m., and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
