John Henry "Johnny" Muhlherr of Radcliff went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013.

Prior to his death, he was cared for by his wife and children at his home. He was of German heritage, the eldest child of John Muhlherr and Victoria (Siefert) Muhlherr. Johnny was born Sept. 18, 1926, at his parents' home near Crystal Lake in Muldraugh, where his parents managed a lodge. He was christened at St. Alban's Church in Meade County in November, 1926.

In 1945, at age 18, Johnny was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. He did a tour in Korea and in Manila, Philippines. He received an honorable discharge in 1947.

Decorations and citations included Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. Johnny was a member of American Legion Post 113 in Elizabethtown.

In civilian life, Johnny worked at Reynolds Metals in Louisville before being employed at Fort Knox. He started there as a truck driver and soon moved to the Fort Knox Motor Pool, where he used his carpentry and mechanical skills. He retired after 32 years at age 55. He then purchased a dump truck and ran a hauling business for 10 years.

He was married to Nancy Lee Fleming of Louisville from 1947 to 1962. He married Frances Eleanora (Ellen) Adams of Oklahoma in 1964. They had a cabin at Nolin Lake, where they enjoyed fishing, boating, skiing and spending time with family and friends. Johnny enjoyed gardening, doing carpentry work in his shop and driving his 1962 Chevy Nova in pa-rades.

Johnny was a member of Stithton Baptist Church, where he served as an usher for many years. During the 1950s, he attended Mill Creek Baptist Church.

Johnny was preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Victoria; a sister, Catherine; and a grandson, Andrew.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ellen Adams Muhlherr; five children and three sons-in-law, Vicki (Muhlherr) and Ed Senn of Louisville, Cindy (Finley) and Walt Casey of Cecilia, Jo Ellen Finley of Meade County, Cheryl (Finley) and Scott Molstad and Dale "Butch" Finley, all of Elizabethtown; 10 grandchildren, three granddaughters-in-law and one grandson-in-law, Josh and Jennifer Senn, Erin Oakes, David and Kathy Casey, Candace Finley Perry, Michael Finley, Curtis and Amanda (Ferris) Pedrick, Kelly and Adam Moore, Shane and Kayla (Cardwell) Pedrick, Molly Finley and Cameron Finley; six great-grandchildren, Dustin, Destiny and Dallas Senn, Nathan and Landon Perry and Isabella Parrota; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Brittney, James and Rickey Senn; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Golda Muhlherr of Radcliff; one sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Jr. Hobbs of Louisville; five nieces and one nephew; and his dog, Frisky.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Radcliff with Pastor Gregg Curtis officiating. Burial, with military honors, follows in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens in Elizabethtown.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and continues at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
