Sister Kate Hawthorne, Daoist nun, religious scholar, flea marketer, citizen of the world, passed on the morning of Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

Sister Kate was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Minnesota to Fred Bowman and Dorothy Flanagan. She took vows in 1982. Her blessing: "May all beings be happy! May all be healthy and holy! May all prosper in the spirit, and enjoy long life!"
She is survived by a daughter, Jeannie Hawthorne Samdani; two sons, Remy Simpson and Gregory Harold Simpson; two granddaughters, Mahassen Godar and Sumayah Godar; and one grandson, Raslan Godar.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Rineyville Elementary School.
