William Bernard Johnson, 80, of Elizabethtown, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at his home.

He was born Oct. 18, 1931, in Christian County. The son of the late Garner Johnson and Lorene McKinney Johnson, he was a retired banker and a member of Heartland Church of Christ in Elizabethtown. During his banking career, he served as vice president and cashier at the Planters Bank and Trust Co. in Hopkinsville; senior vice president and cashier of First Hardin National Bank in Elizabethtown; president of First Citizens Bank in Elizabethtown and vice president and cashier of the Bank of Ohio County in Beaver Dam. A favorite saying of his was: "There are two things in life that I really detest, a liar and a thief."
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Carneal Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Betty D. Johnson; two daughters, Sandra (Wilbur) Bewley of Nicholasville and Karen (Greg) Smith of Elizabethtown; a son, Mike (Lois) Johnson of Versailles; a sister, Joyce Putty of Hopkinsville; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Osteen of Hopkinsville and Anita Poston of Ashland City, Tenn.; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and four stepgrandsons.
The funeral is at 2 p.m. EDT today, July 1, at Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Nathan Whisnant officiating. Burial follows in McKinney Family Cemetery in Christian County with a brief graveside service at 5 p.m. EDT.
Visitation continues at noon EDT today at the funeral home.
