Annette McMurtry Gilbert, 90, died peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2014, in Greer, S.C.

Originally from Elizabethtown, Annette was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Leon P. Gilbert; her parents, James Staley McMurtry and Dolly Howell McMurtry; six sisters, Betty Durrett, Georgia Vertrees, Eva Goldsmith, Ruby Ashcraft, Lillian Parrish and Mildred "Milly" Cooper; and two brothers, Edgar "Mac" McMurtry and Robert McMurtry.
Annette obtained an associate's degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and maintained a life-long love of creative writing and local theater. Her husband's career with the Celanese Corp. led them to Maryland, Canada and South Carolina before retiring to Hilton Head Island. She was active in Island Playhouse and volunteered at First Presbyterian Church's Bargain Box for many years. Annette later moved from Hilton Head to be near her family.
She is survived by five children, Christie Gilbert Stanton, Dale Gilbert, Glenn Gilbert, Todd Gilbert and Kerrie Gilbert and their spouses; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A private service is at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church in Greenville, S.C., on Saturday, March 29.
