Phedus Bruce Beers, 85, of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.

He was a native of Palmerton, Pennsylvania, and retired after 20 years of service in the United States Army. He spent 12 years in Europe with Army Company C 17th Battalion and was a drill sergeant. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 113.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Metcalf Beers; a stepson, Marty Hicks; his parents, Asa and Emma Beers; and by his 14 siblings.

He is survived by his stepdaughters, Connie (Harold) Bird and Nina (Junior) Casteel, all of Elizabethtown; a sister, Pearl Bierman of Palmerton; six stepgrandchildren, Scott Dean, Kim Compton, Chris Casteel, Stevie Casteel, Bruce Casteel and Andy Casteel; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The funeral is noon Saturday at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Brother Steve Hill officiating. Burial follows in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and continues after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Veterans Administration.
