He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized when the family moved to Winnsboro. His membership at First Zion was under the pastoral care of Rev. W. S. Robinson.

Alex enlisted into the United States Army in 1960. He proudly served as a Medical Specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was employed at Graphic Packaging Plant 31 as a millwright for 40 years.

On December 17, 1966, he was joined in holy matrimony to Laura Ann Blunt. The two of them enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all. He is and will be greatly missed by all.

Alex was preceded in death by his father, Gus Spencer, Sr., his brothers Gus Spencer Jr. and Wardell Spencer, and his sister, Alberta Watson.

He leaves to honor and cherish his memories, his wife, Laura Ann and their two beloved sons, Marcus (Sarah) and Michael (M. Courtney). He is also survived by Varda Pleasant of Palmdale, California. His legacy of love is his grandchildren, Alex Michael, Haley Marie, and Madison Bowman Spencer, and he was anxiously awaiting the birth of Macy Spencer. His mother, Mary Bowman Spencer; his mother-in-law, Lela M. Varner; his sisters: Beatrice Jackson, Stella Carr (Charles), and Mary Chandler; and his brothers, Chills A. Spencer (Renea), Lamar Spencer (Arnita), and Robert D.
