James Ray "J.R." Hood
Funeral services for James Ray "J.R." Hood, 89, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 17, 2013, in the Chapel at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM until service time.
Mr. Hood died Monday, October 14, 2013, at his home. His parents, Ray Hood and Mary Gwathney Hood, his sister Frances Hood Dalton, and his brother, B.P. Hood, preceded him in death. Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Kathryn Hood; sons, James Ray "J.R." Hood, Jr., wife, Jenny, and John F. Hood; daughters, Dr. Janet L. Hood-Hanchey and husband J. Keith Hanchey, and Kathryn "Kathy" Hood; grandson, Ryan Hood and wife, Brooke; granddaughter, Courtney Hood; and great grandsons, Jackson and Reagan.
He was a life-long resident of Monroe and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1941, Northeast Louisiana College and Louisiana Tech, with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, in 1949. He served in the US Air Force during WWII
as a P-51 Fighter Pilot and subsequently in the Air Force Reserves. During his career Mr. Hood was a Manager for Land and Exploration at Southwest Gas and later an independent oil and gas professional and life-long member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen. J.R. and Kay were charter members of St. John's Christian Church and members of The First Christian Church of Monroe.
J.R. was a faithful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was also a good steward of the land, water and creatures of the Bayou and found joy in each of its seasons.
