Mrs. Scalia passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center. Mrs. Scalia was born in Monroe, LA on August 7, 1930 to Edward James and Verna LaMonica. She was a cherished only child. She graduated from St. Matthew High School and attended Northeast Junior College for 1 year until she was old enough to enter the St. Francis School of Nursing where she finished 2nd in her class. After completing nursing school, she married Roy Scalia, her high school sweetheart on November 15, 1951. She moved with him to El Paso, TX where he was stationed and she began her nursing career at Hotel Due Hospital. Upon returning to Monroe, JoAnn worked at St. Francis on pediatrics and then as Dr. Roy Talbot's nurse in his practice. She eventually returned to St. Francis and began her life's work of caring for patients and supporting their families. She was well respected and was Head Nurse of the Orthopedic and Neurological floor for 15 years. JoAnn was a wonderful nurse whose positive and caring spirit touched all of those she cared for and worked with. She was recognized often for her work over the years and she served several terms on the Louisiana State Board of Nurses. Many nurses and nursing students benefited from her mentoring over her nursing career. JoAnn was also involved in her community. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters; the Optimist Club; Monroe Garden Club and Woman's Life which she served as President for the Southern Region. JoAnn so loved St. Francis that she returned after her retirement and was a member of the Auxiliary where she and Roy volunteered in the Gift Shop. While JoAnn was a very busy lady in her professional and community life, she was also an extraordinary Daughter, Wife, Mother and Grandmother. JoAnn dearly cared for her Mother in the last years of her life. She cherished each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Roy completed each other; the two truly became one. Both devoted to supporting the other. She became his eyes; he, her memory and her legs.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother, Edward James; In-laws, Frank R. and Mary Scalia; Infant son, Frederick Joseph Scalia; Her sister and brother-in-law, Rosalie and Arnold Tucker; and Sister-in-law, Rita Morrison.
